20% Public Restrooms Fail Basic Hygiene

A July 2025 international survey by Tork revealed that only 20% of public restrooms globally meet user expectations for cleanliness and hygiene. Poor maintenance, lack of supplies, and outdated cleaning cycles were cited as key reasons behind dissatisfaction.

The industry is rapidly shifting to sensor-based, data-driven cleaning systems—which notify staff when toilets need cleaning, when consumables are low, and even track footfall patterns. These tools help improve efficiency while reducing unnecessary cleaning rounds.

As post-pandemic expectations rise, the professional hygiene market is expanding rapidly. Cleanliness is now tied to visitor confidence, public health, and revenue impact, especially in commercial spaces like malls, airports, and healthcare units. The global market is expected to hit USD 25 billion by 2030, with smart hygiene solutions taking centrestage.
