Agra’s night cleaning plan fails

Less than a month after it started, the Agra Municipal Corporation’s plan to clean major market-places at night, has ended. Devised to better its ranking in the central government’s Swacch Survekshan Survey, it envision the cleaning of commercial areas between 8pm and 12pm, to avoid inconveniencing shoppers and residents, as well as facilitating easy transport of refuse to the nearest landfill. However, the markets were found to have remained littered next morning.

Each area was assigned a team of 250 workers, who were to be supervised by sanitation inspectors. Despite complaints, these senior officials failed to adequately supervise the teams, leading to the failure of the plan.
