Though it is home to Asia’s cleanest village Mawlynnong, Meghalaya will implement the Alappuzha model of waste management in Shillong and Tura as the state struggles to give itself a clean image ahead of the 2022 National Games which it will host. A delegation from Meghalaya comprising Urban Affairs Minister Hamlestson Dohling, Public Health Engineering Minister Samlin Malngiang and South Tura legislator Agatha K. Sangma landed at Alappuzha previously known as Alleppey, which is also a district in Kerala. The ministers and officials from Meghalaya had consultations with municipal authorities of Alappuzha and visited various sites to know more about the town’s way of managing its waste.
Alappuzha Municipal Board established 5,000 kitchen bins, 3,000 biogas plants, 2,800 pipe composting units and 218 aerobic composting units in the municipal areas by way of which the town was able to take care of 80 per cent of its waste produced by a population of 1.74 lakh. “In 2022, Meghalaya will host the National Games, and it will be our target to ensure that we are able to manage our waste and make Meghalaya as waste-free as early as possible. We will work on the target and deadline to achieve our objective,” Dohling said.
