Bhopal Corporation seeks waste to energy solutions

In order to process 25 lakh tonnes of waste dumped at its landfill site, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking for technologies to accomplish its waste to energy programme. The waste to energy programme is envisaged to generate 30% of energy from the available waste.

Kishore Kanyal, Additional Municipal Commissioner told Clean India Journal,“We are  mulling over for a Joint Venture with a foreign based company on the waste to energy technology which will give us a detailed presentation by the end of this month. The foreign company has a technology which can convert 100 tonnes waste into 4MW of energy. As of today, available technologies can only generate 1MW of energy from the waste.”

The waste to energy plant would be set up in an area of eight acres for a period of 30 years, which is available with BMC. As per the programme, the technology can process mixed waste except glass, metal and construction material.

As a part of the waste management programme, BMC is planning to appoint an agency which could take up comprehensively all the jobs related to door to door collection, supervision, transportation and processing of waste.
