Aluva municipality, Kochi has collaborated with a local private waste management firm to launch automated bio booths that help reduce human intervention while treating waste.
These air-conditioned booths, called Robobin Food Waste Management Experience, are designed to handle up to 50kg of organic solid waste and 5,000 litres of wastewater daily. The booths will also convert waste into biogas and manure.
Construction cost per unit is Rs3 lakh, and the first booth was set up at the municipal office to treat waste from municipality’s canteen.
These booths will soon be installed in areas like private bus stand, Paravur Junction and town halls, including Thottakkattukara Priyadarshini Town Hall and Mahatma Gandhi Town Hall. Hotels and restaurants can also use the facility by paying a fee.
Municipality officials said an initial study on bio-booths was promising and this would be hailed as ‘Aluva model’ of waste management in the near future.
