In a move to keep the city clean, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has bought 26 stationary compactors with dual purpose devices from Hyva, Holland. These compactors have been commissioned at four sites – Grant Road (East & West), Bombay Central and Khetwadi. BMC has also purchased nine prime movers from Ashok Leyland for towing away the compactors to the dumping grounds.
At sites, where garbage is generated less, the BMC is planning to replace five cubic metre capacity bins with either stationary or mobile (mini or large) compactors. The mobile units, pegged at a cost of र 35-40 lakhs each, are more effective for door-to-door collection of garbage.
Additionally, the BMC is in the process of upgrading a fleet of 1160 vehicles to transport garbage by making 1918 trips each day. Mobile toilets of 10 seats each is also in the pipeline. About 75 units of these toilets, which can be towed away by tractors, are currently being distributed to the eastern, western and city divisions of Mumbai on request. It has approved appointing additional 25 marshals each in the 24 wards of Mumbai city.
