North Central Railway (NCR) is planning to outsource mechanised cleaning of coaches under Clean Train Station scheme for a period of three years. The job contract will entail cleaning of approximately 600 coaches per day in two shifts for long distance enroute trains halting at Jhansi.
Sandeep Mathur, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), North Central Railway, said, “The contract involves mechanised cleaning of toilets, pathways and coaches using high pressure jet cleaning, vacuum cleaning and buffing machines. As per the daily schedule, cleaning and water filling will be done in the morning shift and night shift with the help of about 100 workers. One team will be assigned cleaning of three to four coaches.
“On-board train cleaning is a new concept in India, which has been implemented in the past couple of years. Since we do not have mechanised cleaning machines and skilled workers to do the same, it is therefore being outsourced,” he added.

North Central Railway is also planning for an integrated approach towards pest and rodent control management of the coaches and yards. Sandeep Mathur, CPRO, NCR, said, “At present, a combined contract of coaches and yards has been awarded to Central Warehousing Corporation two months back at Allahabad by the NCR for the first time.” NCR is planning to extend the contract at locations/yards which entail primary maintenance of trains like in Kanpur, Jhansi, Gwalior and Agra.
