Clean up campaign by students

Two hundred students from more than 20 schools and colleges recently volunteered for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s cleanliness campaign for clean and green city.

The students were appointed as Cleanliness Marshals by the Municipal Corporation with the aim of making Ahmedabad filth-free. The certificates issued to Marshals give them authority to prevent a person from littering. Though they cannot impose a fine, students can contact AMC officials who will take action against the violator. In case, the Marshals do not get a response from civic officials, they can call Municipal Commissioner or a Deputy Municipal Commissioner directly and register a complaint.

If AMC workers do not clean an area on a regular basis, if the garbage is not collected regularly or if dumpsters in the area are not emptied on time, the Marshal can contact AMC officials and ensure that the problem is addressed. The Marshal’s duty also involves creating awareness about cleanliness in his neighbourhood and among friends. He/she can organise cleanliness drives in the locality. Taking this campaign further, Cleanliness Marshals will keep an eye on their areas on their way to schools or colleges. They will keep watch on the societies, buildings and nearby parks.
