Cleaner public toilets in Mumbai

BMC to maintain and clean public toilets vigorously

It has been decided by the BMC to clean the public and community toilets five times a day, as was done during the city’s fight against COVID-19. The Solid Waste Management department has received instructions and is discussing the implementation plan.

A major problem for the city is the filthy, stinky condition of the public toilets. Furthermore, they become a nuisance to residents living nearby, as well as serious health hazards. In spite of substantial funding spent by BMC, MHADA, and MMRDA, toilet maintenance has been neglected.

Furthermore, the toilet-to-user ratio has been negatively affected. A census slum population report indicates that there is currently one community toilet (built for slum pockets) for every 42 males and 34 females, while SBM calls for one toilet for every 35 males and 25 females. Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said ‘the BMC had decided to sanitize the toilets five times a day.’
