Delhi Acts on Drain Sewage

Sewage from seven assembly constituencies in Delhi, including Deoli, Ambedkar Nagar, Sangam Vihar, Chhatarpur, Mehrauli, Malviya Nagar, and Greater Kailash, has been entering the Barapullah drain untreated. This is owing to gaps in sewerage infrastructure. Of these, only Malviya Nagar and Greater Kailash currently have adequate sewer connections in place.

Responding to multiple petitions, including one filed by the residents’ welfare association of Nizamuddin West, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had sought an explanation from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) regarding efforts to prevent untreated sewage from entering stormwater drains that eventually reach the Yamuna. In response, DJB submitted detailed short-, medium-, and long-term action plans outlining remedial measures.

As per its July 4 report, DJB has already laid sewerage lines in 35 unauthorised colonies across the affected constituencies. Looking ahead, four decentralised sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) are proposed at Fatehpur Beri, Chandan Hola Satbari, Maidangarh, and Chhatarpur Extension to cover 30 unauthorised colonies and several villages. These DSTPs are part of the medium-term intervention, while a broader expansion of the sewerage network remains the long-term goal.

The DJB has committed to intercepting sewage before it reaches stormwater drains and will implement all necessary measures to eliminate untreated discharge, thereby supporting the wider effort to clean the Yamuna.
