Fabricspa washes 8000 clothes in a single day for flood-relief victims

Few months back, when many parts of Assam suffered floods, thousands of people lost both their homes and their possessions. Jyothy Fabricare Services’ Fabricspa stepped in to provide relief. It took an initiative, by collecting clothes from its customers which were then washed, packed and delivered to flood-affected victims in Assam.

Explaining the process to Clean India Journal, Sagar Sodha, Zonal Head (West) at Jyothy Fabricare said, “First, messages were sent out by Fabricspa to its customers, asking for old clothes. We have more than 10 lakh customers in Bengaluru alone. Over 15 days, customers responded with enthusiasm. They either dropped the clothes at one of Fabricspa’s 80 Bengaluru outlets or got it picked up from their homes.”

In all, more than 8,000 items of clothing had been collected: shirts, pants, T-shirts, ladies’ tops, salwars, dupattas, saris, kids’ garments as well as sweaters, blankets, bedsheets and towels. In a single day, this entire lot was sorted by category and then washed at Fabricspa’s 30,000 square foot Bengaluru facility. On that day, the entire office, including the sales staff spent the day at the factory, packing the laundered clothes. Finally, about 150 boxes and 30 bags consisting of 6129 pieces of clothes were despatched to Guwahati by train.

In Assam, the parent company of Fabricspa received the consignment and delivered them to the local MLA who was in charge of flood relief. These donated garments were then distributed to the flood-affected victims of Sonitpur district.

“We are a CSRhumble company, but it has become the norm for us to help people with garments. Money may go into different hands, but clothes go directly to the beneficiaries. By providing freshly washed clothes to those who have lost everything, we fulfilled at least one of their daily needs,” he added.
