Fishing in sewers

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has taken up a 500-crore project under the JNNURM to desilt and strengthen brick sewers in nine prominent roads. The project aims to relieve the city of chronic waterlogging every monsoon. According to a civic official, the silt scooped out is enough to cover the 48m Shahid Minar 10 times or fill up the 9million gallon capacity Tallah tank some 150 times. At one spot, the civic engineers found a fish in the sewer water. A magur fish weighing about 2kg!
