Foreign waste dumped in India

Violating the norms of the Basel (Switzerland) Convention that ban export or shipping of hazardous waste from rich countries to the poor ones, England and USA are sending their household wastes to India posing a major threat to this country’s ecological system. It has surfaced that instead of recycling the rubbish, England is dumping it to India as the cost of recycling is 12,000 per tonne but to ship it to India costs only 2,800. Nearly 180 tonnes of US wastes was dumped into farm wells in Coimbatore and another 1000 tonnes was found to be rotting in Tuticorin port.
