Garbage Disposal

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to follow some of the steps initiated by the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in solid waste management. PMC is likely to start a vermicomposting project for managing the organic waste from the vegetable markets. PCMC has over the last one and half years been successfully running a vermicomposting project using 30 tonnes of organic waste generated from the vegetable markets everyday. The project is being managed by an agency, Ujrit-Passco, at the Moshi garbage depot in the outskirts of Pimpri-Chinchwad, off the Pune-Nashik road.

The PMC will also provide wet garbage and hotel waste to farmers in 10km radius of Pune city for composting. The civic body has promised to transport the garbage to farmlands free of cost. The city generates about 1,100-1,500 tonnes of solid waste daily, which includes 250 tonnes of wet garbage. The mayor has appealed to the farmers to approach the PMC and benefit from the scheme.
