Good Housekeeping Making a Difference with Automation

Vaneeta Arora, Corporate Director, Housekeeping, The Park, understands the need for automation in her segment in the hospitality industry and with clarity explains the need for the same addressing solutions, advantages, challenges and enhancements.

Traditionally reliant on manual processes and human intuition, housekeeping is being revolutionised by digital solutions. These technologies are enhancing efficiency & improving service quality.

Traditional methods are often labour-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to human error. The demand for higher standards and personalized services has increased, putting pressure on housekeeping departments to adapt. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic period has heightened awareness of hygiene and cleanliness, making it imperative for hotels to implement stringent and transparent cleaning protocols.

Digital solutions offer a way to meet these challenges by streamlining operations and ensuring consistent quality. There are various digital solutions available that are modernising housekeeping and helping in shaping the future of the hospitality industry.

Housekeeping management software platforms provide a centralized system to manage tasks, schedule and staff. By digitizing these processes, hotels can optimize staff allocation, reduce downtime, and ensure timely completion of tasks. Software solutions can automatically assign tasks based on room status, staff availability and priority levels.

With mobile access, housekeeping staff can receive real-time updates on their assignments, report the status of their tasks and request assistance if needed. This enhances communication and coordination within the team. Managers can monitor the performance of housekeeping staff through the software, identifying areas for improvement and provide targeted training. This data-driven approach leads to higher efficiency and better service quality.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing housekeeping by connecting various devices and systems to the internet, enabling automated control and monitoring. IoT-enabled rooms alert housekeeping staff when a room is vacant and ready for cleaning or if a guest requires additional amenities.

Sensors monitor occupancy, temperature and air quality, ensuring a comfortable environment for guests. Devices track the usage of cleaning supplies and amenities, automatically alerting the staff when stocks are low, preventing shortages.

Robotics is playing a significant role in housekeeping, particularly in tasks that are repetitive or hazardous. Robotic vacuum cleaners navigate hotel hallways and guest rooms, efficiently cleaning floors without human intervention. This helps housekeeping staff to focus on more detailed cleaning tasks.

Many hotels have adopted disinfection robots that use UV light or electrostatic spraying to sanitize surfaces. These robots can access hard-to-reach areas and provide a higher level of cleanliness than manual methods.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are transforming how housekeeping operations are planned and executed. AI can analyse data from various sources to predict when equipment or facilities might require maintenance. This proactive approach minimizes downtime and extends the lifespan of assets. Machine learning algorithms can analyse guest preferences and feedback to offer personalized housekeeping services. For example, if a guest prefers extra pillows or specific cleaning products, this information can be used to customise their preferences.

The benefits of automation include faster room turnover, reduced labour costs, and the ability to handle peak periods more effectively. Improved quality and consistency reduce the likelihood of guest complaints and efficient inventory management, predictive maintenance, and optimised staff scheduling all contribute to better resource utilisation.

Challenges include an initial investment in technology and training. Data security and privacy become crucial and hotels must implement robust security measures to protect guest information and comply with relevant regulations. New digital solutions must be compatible with existing hotel management systems and seamless integration is essential to avoid disruptions and ensure that all systems work together harmoniously.

Hotels must choose digital solutions that are adaptable and scalable to accommodate future growth and technological advancements. This ensures that the investment remains relevant and beneficial in the long term. The future of housekeeping in the hospitality industry looks promising with emerging trends like voice-activated assistants, smart speakers, Augmented Reality (AR) for staff training and assisting guests in navigating the hotel, sustainable housekeeping practices by reducing waste, and promoting eco-friendly products and processes.
