Green Toilets at Nilgiris

Rural Development Organisation (RDO), an NGO in the Nilgiris has launched cost effective and eco-friendly green toilets to mark World Environment Day. The NGO is actively working to eradicate open defecation in the Nilgiris and is also facilitating loans of 20, 000 to SHG members for procuring pre-fabricated toilets.

The RDO has successfully assisted 5,550 families in constructing household toilets at an estimated cost of 11.10 crore. Pre-fabricated toilets are light, easy to clean, dust resistant, do not require foundation and economizes use of water. The biggest advantage is that a common septic tank that can be set up in labour quarters, schools, hotels and tourist spots bringing down the costs. The portable toilet costing around 16, 700 is made of zinc sheet cladding.
