The third panel discussion, ‘4M Technology to Sustainability-Measuring, Monitoring, Mobilising, and Managing,’ moderated by Ralph Sunil, Sr. Vice President Administration at JSW Steel, brought together industry experts to discuss the integration of technology and sustainability in corporate settings. The panel featured Dr Sanjay Pai, VP-Facilities at Larsen & Toubro, Sudeep Ghoshal, Head-Administration & Infrastructure at Reliance Capital, and Vinay R Deshmukh, Executive Director & CEO at Forbes Facility Services, each sharing their unique experiences and insights on achieving sustainability through innovative measures.

Achieving Sustainability through Technology and Innovation:

Sudeep Ghoshal shared a compelling case study from Reliance Capital, highlighting their journey to sustainability in their new corporate headquarters. Despite initial challenges, the company successfully implemented ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 41001 standards, reduced wastages, and achieved LEED Gold certification within ten months. Innovative solutions such as dimming systems for lights, occupancy-controlled LED lights, and integrated CO2 and CO sensors played a crucial role in this transformation.

Dr Sanjay Pai discussed the implementation of an in-house built app that measures various parameters, including air quality, smart washrooms, parking status, visitor management, and cafeteria services, contributing to the facility’s overall sustainability. The company’s focus on energy and efficiency, alongside achieving LEED certification and ISO certifications, underscored their commitment to sustainable practices.

Ralph Sunil shared three case studies, demonstrating the power of technology in achieving sustainability. From controlling harmful gas emissions in a steel plant through IoT-based sensors to managing air quality at Delhi airport with 36,000 sensors, and finally, hosting a sustainable G20 Summit, these examples showcased the diverse applications of technology in promoting sustainability.

Futuristic Elements in Sustainability:

The panel discussion concluded with a forward-looking perspective, highlighting futuristic elements in the sustainability space. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), the use of Metaverse and NFTs for mental health treatment and wellbeing, and employing staff from the LGBTQ community for facilities management were identified as key elements. These innovative approaches reflect the evolving nature of sustainability and the need for inclusive and comprehensive strategies.

The insights shared during the panel discussion underscored the critical role of technology in achieving sustainability goals.
