Hawker Menace

The BMC initiative to clean the western waterfront saw a massive demolition drive against unauthorized food stalls along the coastline, including Juhu beach and areas in Bandra, Khar and Khar Danda in November. Around 379 stalls and hawkers from the sea shores were razed & evicted and a hefty fine of over र6 lakh collected. Well, this is not the first time the hawkers and illegal squatters have been chased out. Two years back a similar action was taken, the shoreline was kept clean but in a few days the hawkers were all back!
