Heat-pump dryer saves money + planet

The age-old traditional way of drying garments on the clothes line is now being explored again as a cost-saving and planet-saving solution.

Jon Dee of DoSomething, Australia, says that clothesline remains one of the cheapest and most effective ways to dry clothes. Even when outdoor drying is not possible, hanging garments on a clothes horse inside, placed in the sunniest or breeziest room, proves effective. In case there is a need for a dryer to dry lots of clothes, he suggests to use a heat-pump dryer.

“Heat-pump dryers cost more upfront but, compared to normal clothes dryers, they save a lot more energy and can save you lots of money on your energy bills.” Jon Dee also campaigned successfully to eliminate phosphates from Australia’s laundry detergents.

According to reports, a heat-pump dryer costs just one-third of that of an electric dryer.
