With a promise to experience the 3000-year-old history of the city of Benares, now renamed Varanasi, the HPMF 8th Annual Convention and Awards was held at the Gateway Hotel Ganges, Varanasi from October 25 to 27, 2018. Even before the actual convention began, delegates imbibed the spirit of the Ganges. Dressed in bright yellow custommade kurtas they flocked to the Dashashwamedh Ghat to attend the Ganga Aarti and cruised down the river touring the ghats on the banks of the river and then celebrated the Gulab Bari Festival with traditional dinner and entertainment at Guleria Kothi. Nitin Nagrale, Founder and General Secretary of the Forum gave a presentation on HPMF achievements. Tracking the journey of the Forum that is now over 2000 members strong, it has recently opened chapters in Sri Lanka and Dubai and is now looking to include countries like Spain, Chile, Canada and USA.
Guest of Honour Giriraj Singh Lotwara humourously complimented Nitin on his purchasing skills saying, “You have purchased our hearts without paying a single penny!” Rahul Pandit, also a Guest of Honour spoke about the need for creating best practices for Hospitality Procurement and lauded HPMF for creating such a wonderful platform for sharing such practices. In sync with the keynote speaker, he advocated vendor development by promoting the practice of ‘Make, Buy and create quality in India’.
“The effective purchase manager must know how to pressurize and how to deliver and how to work around the process.” In driving this message across to the audience he said, “even a lion has to get up and exert energy to catch his prey.”
Referring to Varanasi, the oldest living civilization as ‘The City of Learning and Burning’, Dr. Rajnikant addressed the audience with the view that the skill development in Incredible India should extend to encouraging artisans to keep alive traditional arts and crafts.
Next on stage was Lion Pankaj Mehta speaking on ‘How to get an idea and execution excellence’. In his characteristic style, he interacted with the audience using pertinent questions intended to distinguish between creativity and innovation. Emphasizing the need to continuously innovate, he recommended that one should be an innovative disruptor. “Innovation is a new combination of old elements and the process involves Preparation, Mastication, Incubation, Inspiration and Verification.”
The panel discussion on the upcoming trend of Block Chain in Hospitality Supply Chain Management was moderated by Harish Chandra, Director of IT at Sarovar Hotels, Gurgaon. It was a thought-provoking interaction on this option highlighting how it will assist in eliminating corruption because of its transparency and the complete traceability by being recorded in the system. It also enables removing the middle man when making reservations. We can only wait, watch and hope that the Block Chain Technology will eventually make a foray into the Hospitality Sector.
The presentation by Silver Partner Welbilt not only covered the existing equipment for storing, cooking, holding and displaying as well as dispensing and serving equipment but also included the latest addition of coffee machines as well as the New Age innovation of convotherm equipment.
Representing the dinner partner — Veeba, Gagan listed the range of sauces, dressings and fruit and chocolate toppings, some of which are fat free thereby appealing to the health-conscious consumer.
The display area on the lawns had artisans demonstrating their crafts. In the adjacent seating area, the programme for the evening commenced with a brief presentation by a representative of Lavazza – the coffee partner for the event.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the awards. Preceding the awards was the inaugural release of the HPMF video paying tribute to the Indian Defence Forces which received an unprecedented response of “Once More”. The screening was followed by the awards function where HPMF honoured eight Armed Forces personnel with the Manik Shree Awards.
Needless to say, it was an emotional moment for the recipients as well as the audience. The HPMF also presented awards to its members honouring Mohan Deshpande and V.T. Alexander with the Kohinoor Award (Lifetime Achievement Award). In addition, Mani Ratna Award (Living Legends) was awarded to Kaushik Jhingan, Man Singh Rathore and Subramanyam Natarajan. There were many more awards appropriately titled to suit the recognition.
The opening speech was delivered by Jay Raman, CMD of Oriental Lotus, Platinum Partner for the convention. Following a brief update on the latest developments in the company, he shifted focus with the rhetoric, “why am I hooked on HPMF?” Repeating what earlier speakers had stated he too wished that someone would award the contract to someone other than L1. He complimented the forum’s power of networking, re-iterating the benefits by saying, “start digging your well before you are thirsty.”
Aval Sethi delivered a wakeup call to those who are stuck in their lives and continue existing instead of living. With a startling title ‘Don’t Die before you are Dead’, the talk focussed on where you are and where you can be and chartered a pathway for reaching the goal. “Stop waiting for someday,” he said. “Your moment is NOW!!!”
Cleanliness is the hallmark of hospitality. The current brouhaha on the use of plastic has turned the spotlight on the hotel industry leaving organizations with no choice but to seek alternatives. The panel discussion ‘Is the Hospitality geared up for the plastic ban in the country?’ was moderated by Mala Singh, Chairperson and MD at PEC Greening India. Ecotels are already following such practices as part of the environmental programme. Seizing the moment, vendors are already marketing alternatives to plastic.
Appropriate for the role of purchase managers in the Hospitality Industry, Amit Pandey gave a talk on ‘Achieving Excellence in Chaos and Change’. The video of a classic shot made by Tiger Woods, served as a start for the talk which further revealed the importance of the Happiness Index.
Sumit Jha, Managing Editor of Draft Editorial Services released the inaugural issue of Procurement Arena – a magazine dedicated to the Procurement Professional. This event was in sync with the theme ‘Swach, Saksham, Samrudhi’ which when translated means Clean, Competence and Prosperity.
