KMC to upgrade garbage disposal system

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) plans to revamp its existing garbage disposal system by introducing new compactor vehicles.  The civic body has purchased 20 portable compactors for 16 lakh each under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP). The compactors would be able to carry five times more garbage than the existing vehicles and would also minimise the number of vehicles carrying garbage to the dumping ground. KMC is also planning to buy 5,000 trash bins made of fibre-glass and place them at important places like markets and in front of high-rises.
