Maharashtra cities to pay fines for untreated sewage

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has sent out notices to all the state’s municipal corporations, warning that they will have to start paying fines from April 1st if they fail to treat 100% of their sewage. Quantum of the fine will depend upon the amount left untreated and the population of the region. Towns with less than 10 lakh residents may have to pay INR10-20 crore as fines, which means that a city like Mumbai may end up shelling out as much as INR200 crore.
