Manual cleaning of sewage lines banned

The Madras High Court has imposed ban on manual cleaning of sewage lines and ordered the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to employ mechanised devices to clean blocks in the sewage system. The sanitary workers in the state were being made to go down the drains everyday without minimum safety precautions and emergency medical support for clearing sewer blocks and septic tanks.
