The Bruhat Bangalore MahanagaraPalike (BBMP) covering nearly one crore people, has collected Rs10.4 lakh in two months as penalty for littering the streets by implementing the provisions of Municipal Solid Waste Rules of 2012.
Empowered by this Rule, the BBMP can impose fine against households for failing to segregate waste and littering them on the streets. Moves are afoot to equip BBMP staff with BlackBerry and cameras to nab and fine those who violate this Rule.
Talking to media about implementation of this Rule, K.C. Yatish Kumar, BBMP Joint Commissioner (Health and solid waste management), has said that spot penalty is being levied and receipts are issued, on the same lines as traffic violations. Anybody causing public nuisance such as spitting, urinating and littering in public, are liable to pay fines.
Yatish Kumar said BBMP would have dedicated environment engineers and they should be assigned with specific tasks. CCTV cameras are also going to be placed in commercial areas to spot out the civic rule offenders.
