If all goes well, the capacity of Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s waste recycling plant at Bhandewadi will be increased from 600 metric tones to 800 metric tonnes from June, Dr Ganvir, Health officer of Nagpur Municipal Corporation told CIJ. “With the growing population, managing waste has become a major issue. We found that the existing Bhandewadi site can serve the needs of the city for only 12 years.Thus, the Corporation has developed an integrated programme/ project for the solid-waste. It is an integrated programme/project given to Hanjer Bio-tech on B-O-O-T basis for a period of 12 years for processing the waste. Hanjer would treat, process and dispose the solid waste.”
Started in April 2005, Hanjer Bio-tech Energies Pvt Ltd is a Mumbai based company involved in solid waste processing using Multi Product Integrated Technology for MSW processing.
Besides the solid waste project, Nagpur Corporation has also taken up bin-free city programme. “In 2008 there were about 700 bins in the city, now it has been reduced to 170 bins. Out of which 80 bins are installed in the commercial area and the remaining in residential. Wastes collected from the houses are directly transferred to the dumping ground,” Ganvir said.
