Plastic Ban

Come 2010, Mumbai’s new Mayor Shraddha Jadhav wants to bring in total ban on all kinds of plastic carry bags. The earlier bans based on thickness of bags had served only as half-measures, with no real respite to the city’s clogged drainage system. However, her colleagues in BMC feel it is better to implement the existing rules rather than going in for a total ban.

Meanwhile, the US capital, Washington’s Mayor Adrian Fenty, has brought in a five cent levy on each plastic bag issued at the check out counter of grocery shops. City’s Urban waterway Anacostia River has been befouled by plastic shopping bags.
