While each state has taken up river cleaning seriously, the Union budget this time has made special allocation of funds for cleaning water bodies. The Finance Minister has announced र600 crore for protection & regeneration of forests, environmental management and cleaning of rivers and lakes in India. A special allocation of र200 crore has been sanctioned for the clean-up of important lakes and rivers. Besides Ganga, rivers and lakes of cultural & historical significance would be taken up under the National Ganga River Basin Authority for the project. Some rivers like Mithi in Mumbai has already crossed the `600crore earmarked at the beginning of the project in 2007.
