Sanitation Mission to improve rural water quality

The government has constituted a State Water and Sanitation Mission in keeping with the guidelines in the National Rural Drinking Water Programme. The Mission would function as a registered Society under the aegis of the Public Works Department here and bye-laws have been framed for implementation of the programme.

Puducherry government is the governing body for the Mission, which would function under the guidance of the Chief Minister. The Mission would function with two separate units, one each for Puducherry and Karaikal regions. The Mission would function as a front line agency, planner and facilitator for implementation of the Water Supply and Total Rural Sanitation projects in the respective regions. Local bodies are also associated with implementation of the mission to improve quality of rural water supply and environmental sanitation through sustainable and demand driver system of community participation.
