The Pollution Control Board of Assam (PCBA) has taken up an ambitious project under the National River Conservation Programme to clean up three polluted rivers – Bharalu (Guwahati), Kolong (Nagaon) and Burhi Dehing (the stretch from Margherita to Ledo) besides Deepor Beel in a phased manner. PCBA as engaged IIT Guwahati to prepare a detailed project report for the Bharalu project. The Board has asked Ramky Group – responsible for the city’s municipal solid waste – to ensure scientific treatment of the waste in Deepor Beel, a Ramsar site wetland with immense bio diversity. Meanwhile, the PCBA has also to address the pollution caused by the coke industry on the city outskirts.
