As part of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA), local people at Gangtok were trained in composting techniques for bio-degradable wastes and Solid Waste Management.
Dehradun-based Clover Organics organized a technical session to train the members of village panchayats, local students and representatives of 40-different NGO’s. The training event was conducted by the Rural Management and Development Department of Sikkim.
According to an official press release from the Sikkim Government, the state government has evolved a Solid Waste Management Plan under the NBA. The emphasis was on imparting training on composting of Sikkim-specific bio-degradable waste.
Hands-on sessions on composting waste were held at the community level and individual household level as well through various methods such as bio-cap, heap composting using kitchen waste along with a mixture of biomass available in the villages.
Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan is a comprehensive programme to ensure sanitation facilities in rural areas with broader goal to eradicate the practice of open defecation.
