Solar Toilets

Solar energy is now being used in Baikunthapur to power and supply water in toilets! This backwater village in West Bengal’s Sunderbans uses solar power to illuminate toilet blocks at night and fill overhead tank with water pumped from a nearby pond. This has done away with the arduous task of drawing water physically to maintain toilets. SP Gon Chaudhury, a renewable expert and a team of young engineers from his Arka Renewable Energy College along with German government help has set up these toilets using easily available materials like solar panels and micro pumps. The cost of the entire assemble is around 4 lakh.
