The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a service involving collection of sanitary and special care waste generated by households. The initiative aims to ensure safe disposal of sanitary pads, adult diapers, condoms, tampons, cotton swabs contaminated with body fluids, bandages, injection needles, razorblades, wax strips, PPE kits and waste from hostels and beauty parlours to be collected in yellow-coloured plastic bags.
Entities can use this facility by registering with BMC’s “Domestic Sanitary and Special Care Waste Collection Service” launched by its Waste Management Department. Registered institutions will get a QR code in the official government platform.
Mumbai city generates around 7,000-8,000 tonnes of solid waste daily of which 70 to 80 tonnes is related to personal hygiene and sanitation. The scheme will be implemented under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner and other city officials.
