Students Start-up on Upcycling Waste

Enactus is the world’s leading experiential learning platform dedicated to creating a better world while developing the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders and social innovators. The Enactus network of global business, academic, and student leaders is unified by their vision to create a more sustainable world. Enactus Kirori Mal is currently running three projects which focuses on upcycling waste.

Enactus Kirori Mal, a student chapter at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, embodies this spirit. Committed to utilizing entrepreneurial action, students at Enactus Kirori Mal aim to transform the lives of underserved communities and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive world. The chapter provides valuable opportunities for students to analyze grassroots-level social and environmental issues and gain practical experience through a diverse range of projects focused on empowering marginalized communities.

Enactus Kirori Mal is currently running 3 projects: Project Syahi, Project JanBhoomi, and Project Dor. Launched in 2019, Project Syahi is an initiative aimed at replacing traditional plastic pens with environmentally conscious alternatives crafted from upcycled paper. Each pen is uniquely embedded with a seed at its rear end, symbolizing a commitment to mitigating plastic pollution and waste management and actively promoting afforestation. The pens are fully customizable and the revenue generated through the sales goes directly to the community of underserved women who produce these pens.

Project JanBhoomi is dedicated to combating land degradation and enhancing waste management through innovative composting and gardening solutions. Some of its achievements include transforming flower waste from Birla Mandir, Delhi, into valuable flower compost, preventing water pollution, and collaborating with the Government of Haryana, established 159 vermicomposting pits to 75+ villages in Palwal, to reduce farmers’ reliance on chemical fertilizers. The project transitioned from producing organic compost and garden toolkits to terracotta home composters. Designed for both households and organizations, these composters facilitate easy and efficient, composting.

Project Dor champions the revival of the endangered Indian tie-and-dye art and operates as a zero-waste brand. Now a registered partnership firm, Dor prioritizes community welfare with four community members as primary beneficiaries, managing its dedicated current account. Dor recently introduced tie-and-dye T-shirts as part of its expansion plans.

Enactus Karori Mal reached the semi-finals of the 2016 Enactus national competition to consistently ranking among the top 30 teams in 2019 and 2020 and as Investor’s Inventure and HSBC HKU Business Case Competition. It has managed to secure grants from KPMG and Mahindra and has received bulk orders from NULP, BCG, and BHEL. Enactus Karori Mal works to fulfil the UN Sustainable Development Goals through its initiatives.

Since 2003, Enactus India is shaping NextGen Leaders who are passionate about taking social entrepreneurial action to create a better India. Over the past year, over 4700 students from 120 colleges have worked on 180 projects that are contributing to and driving India’s social impact missions such as access to clean water & sanitation, gender equality, quality education, farmer development and environmental sustainability, according to their platform.

The process begins by establishing programs on college campuses where each campus program is mentored by a faculty advisor and supported by a local business advisory panel. Through the year, the Enactus India program trains and develops student teams by organizing and implementing training events that support their development. The mentorship and training enable students to take an entrepreneurial approach to empowerment and finally, collaboration and competition drive impact and best practice sharing with the help of a series of national and global conventions & competitions that encourage creativity and rewards results.
