Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) recently bagged an award for its energy efficiency programmes at an international conference held in Chennai. In the past, Surat Corporation has won many awards in different categories like best performing city, national energy conservation, urban water supply, excellence in governance, urban poverty alleviation programme, financial reporting and best accounting methods. With many wind mills to generate electricity, Surat is now aiming to become a ‘Solar City’ by setting solar plants on science centre and office buildings.
