Disparity of water & sewer disposal and collection & segregation facilities between different areas has been a major issue in metropolitan cities. Mumbai faces its share of hurdles too. On an average, the City generates over 7,025mt of waste on a daily basis, of which 5000mt is general municipal waste, 2000mt silt & construction debris and 10mt bio-medical waste. Managing the growing quantity of waste against limited dumping grounds has demanded implementation of effective solid waste management programme in Mumbai. Prakash Patil, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (SWM) of MCGM shares with CIJ the various initiatives taken, right from making use of advance technology to creating awareness among the citizens.
