Housekeeping in hotels is in the middle of a structural reset. Rising compliance demands, labour shortages, tightening budgets, and an urgent push towards measurable sustainability have altered the very foundation of how the department operates. Daily routines that were once considered standard practice—chemical use, linen handling, room turnaround, waste flow management, procurement choices—are all being re-examined under tougher performance expectations and sharper scrutiny from owners, brands, and guests alike.

Chemical dispensing accuracy, microfiber adoption, dispenser-based amenities, structured waste segregation, and linen lifecycle management have moved from “good practice” to “operational requirement”. At the same time, the profession is grappling with diminishing interest from new entrants, wage disparity, and the widespread misconception that housekeeping is merely a cleaning function.
