The sustainable route to sanitary napkin disposal

In this interview, Nishat Goyal, COO, Rentokil Initial Hygiene introduces the Sani Pro Green process, which converts used sanitary napkins to environment-friendly outputs in an energy-efficient, oxygen-deprived manner.

What prompted Rentokil Hygiene to address this particular issue?

We recognised that menstrual hygiene is not just a matter of well-being but also a sustainability concern, and it is an issue that has gained significant importance in recent years. We wanted to take a proactive stance, aligning with our commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Businesses today are increasingly focused on creating inclusive environments, and providing access to hygienic menstrual products has become a vital aspect of our corporate social responsibility.

In what ways does improper disposal of sanitary napkins harm the environment?

Improper disposal of sanitary napkins is a significant environmental threat. These products contain non-biodegradable materials that don’t decompose easily, leading to pollution when disposed of incorrectly. Additionally, pests and rodents attracted to uncontrolled disposal sites create public health hazards. Burning them in open spaces, a common but unsafe disposal method, releases harmful chemicals and emissions into the air, contributing to air pollution.

What is the present scope of the problem of improper sanitary napkin disposal? How is it expected to increase in the coming years?

The issue of improper sanitary napkin disposal is widespread across India and affects both urban and rural areas. As awareness of menstrual hygiene grows, the usage of sanitary napkins is increasing. Consequently, without sustainable disposal practices, the problem is expected to worsen. The rise in waste generated will strain our waste management systems, exacerbating environmental pollution.

Please explain the process you follow for safe disposal, and the science behind it.

We’ve introduced the ‘Sani Pro Green®’ process, which uses Low-Temperature Thermal Decomposition (LTTD), a cutting-edge technology adhering to global environmental norms. LTTD breaks down used sanitary napkins safely in an oxygen-deprived environment, converting them into environmentally friendly outputs without harmful emissions.

The science behind LTTD is its ability to decompose waste materials at lower temperatures, significantly reducing energy consumption compared to traditional incineration methods. The by-product of LTTD is non-toxic ash, which is then used to produce a variety of items, including flower pots and bricks.

How can this solution help clients meet their ESG goals and fulfil other regulatory requirements? How does it reduce energy requirements?

Our Sani Pro Green solution aligns with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. It demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and responsible waste management. The significant reduction in energy consumption through LTTD lowers operational costs and reduces the carbon footprint. Clients can achieve substantial savings while enhancing their ESG performance. The entire process is completely compliant with the Central Pollution Control Board regulations of the Government of India.

What certifications does this solution meet?

The Sani Pro Green process adheres to the highest international standards for Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE). It surpasses the requirements set by the Central Pollution Control Board of the Government of India. Rigorous testing and analysis ensure environmental efficacy and energy optimization, making it an industry benchmark. As an organisation, Rentokil Initial is also the recipient of the prestigious Ecovadis certification globally.

In practical terms, what can a client expect after choosing your solution?

Once a client chooses our Sani Pro Green solution, they can expect a comprehensive approach to menstrual hygiene disposal. Solutions like the Feminine Hygiene units and the Sanitary Pad vending machines already exist in our portfolio. In addition to these, we further assess their specific needs, install equipment, provide training and efficiently collect used sanitary napkins. Clients receive accurate and comprehensive reports for compliance and internal records.

Our ongoing support ensures effectiveness and helps clients meet their sustainability goals. It’s a practical and reliable way to address a pressing issue while advancing sustainability and regulatory compliance. We had kicked off the Sani Pro Green service for our corporate customers based in Bangalore and now all set to serve our customers in Mumbai and Pune markets as well.
