The world’s first effective disinfectant against a fatal fungus

Medical supplies company Medline has developed micro-kill germicidal bleach wipes that are effective against Candida Auris, a multidrug-resistant fungus that can cause serious infections in hospitalised patients. The fungus, which has a mortality rate of 35%, has been shown to linger in healthcare facilities despite efforts to eradicate it with traditional disinfectants. It can be difficult to treat and has caused outbreaks worldwide.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has cleared the product for marketing as killing the fungus on hard, non-porous surfaces. It can now be used as part of infection prevention-informed room turnovers and nurses can use them on medical equipment and high-touch surfaces.
