The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning to set up a thermocol waste processing plant recycle the 3.65lakh kilogramme of thermocol waste generated in the city every year. Every day, about 1000kg of thermocol waste is disposed in garbage bins, rivers or nullahs leading to pollution.
Speaking to Clean India Journal, Suresh Jagtap, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) said, “This is the first project by the civic body that will deal with the problem of thermocol waste disposal The project has been proposed in the civic budget and the construction of the plant is likely to start few months after the standing committee sanctions the proposal. Besides proper disposal of thermocol, the unit will also provide a source of income by way of selling thermocol items made of the recycled material.
“The project aims at better utilisation and recycling of thermocol waste. A couple of sites have been identified for the proposed plant. The primary-level planning has been done and the option of roping in private players and experts is also being considered,” he added.
