Tirupur Towards replicating a Green Town concept

Known as the Textile city and located in the Coimbatore district, Tirupur is one of the most important industrial centers of Tamil Nadu. Hindered by shortage of manpower for cleaning and sanitation works, Tirupur Municipal Commissioner KR Selvaraj is planning to replicate a proven success model of mechanised cleaning leveraging through E-governance. He shares his views

Educating public on Waste Management

We are educating the public through many forums about the usage of plastic carry bags below 40 microns, paper and other recyclable material. We are spreading awareness through various media, rallies, pamphlets and visits to commercial establishments for the implementation of the same. We are also conducting raids to bring down the plastic waste below the permissible level. Through these efforts plastic usage has been reduced at many places.

Industrial waste disposal

Majority of the industries existing in Tirupur are of plastic, paper, hosiery and textile. Dyeing units are being taken care of by the State Pollution Control Board. Most of these units are outside the Corporation limits. Textile units are within the Corporation limits and cotton waste from these units is recyclable. Most of the plastic waste is collected by different agencies for recycling.

Solid Waste Management Programmes

A consultant for commissioning of a power project in the city to harness the potential of solid waste has been sought for by the Chennai Municipal Corporation on behalf of the Tirupur Corporation. EOI has been called for the same by Chennai Municipal Corporation.

Over 500 tonnes of solid waste is generated on a daily basis. The Corporation has a 10 acre compost yard, which is equipped with machineries. It is yet to be upgraded from the aspect of scientific disposal. We are also planning to float a new tender for waste to energy plant. We have drawn an action plan and are waiting for the consultancy report. As per the plan, we are going to implement it through a cluster approach by involving local bodies. Besides this, one third of the Tirupur Corporation has been covered under sewerage treatment and two third is yet to be covered for which the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is awaited.

Mechanized cleaning of roads

We are using the traditional method of sweeping, as we do not have a success model to follow in terms of mechanised cleaning but we are open to the idea of replicating a successful model.

Eco-friendly initiatives

The Corporation is likely to implement the Green Town concept, which will involve replacing all lighting systems with energy efficient LEDs and going in for solar lighting systems for street lights and other civic amenities. Tenders will be floated for implementation of solar energy based Green Building concept. Outsourcing of park management is another avenue which will be looked at. Around 10,000 saplings have been planted under the Green Town initiative. We are in consultation with an agency to manage the Corporation’s main office building on the basis of Green Town concept by installing solar panels.
