Three teams from US based Purdue University were recently awarded in the Student Soybean and Corn Innovation contest sponsored by the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Corn Marketing Council for their sustainable creations like melt-away cupcake liners, biodegradable cork and toilet paper. TerraMat, a cork product designed by doctoral students can be made of both soybeans and corn. The product can be used in corkboards or floor mats. While melt-a-way cupcake liners are designed to become part of the cupcake during the baking process. This eliminates the hassle of removing a paper liner and also reduces paper waste.
The third team came up with a process for biodegradable toilet paper. The environmental friendly toilet paper is the waste cellulose generated from the corn field.
