Underground Garbage Bins

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is considering installing underground garbage bins in the city. To begin the project with, the civic body has identified four locations — Vasantrao Naik Marg opposite Dhobi Ghat, L Jagmohandas Marg near Napeansea House and opposite Parsi Baudi on Karamveer Marg and opposite Sessions Court in Fort on the same road.

The estimated cost of a bin is Rs 12 lakh and the capacity of each garbage bin will be 1100 litres. Each bin will have two intake bins, a hydraulic lifting system and a flap that can be operated by foot to dump garbage.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, Vijay Singhal said, “The purpose is to eliminate the dustbins on roads in commercial areas. The underground garbage bins will have a box with only flap covers visible on the roads from where people can dump garbage. Once the bins are successfully installed on these locations, we will try to install them at other locations in the city. Tenders are already floated, and the systems will be installed in within next four months.”
