The Need
As a leading company in cleaning segment, we know the consequences of global warming, which are having significant and harmful impacts on our environment and climate, leading us towards water crisis. According to an estimate done by the World Bank, India will exhaust its fresh water by 2050 at the current rate of consumption. Oblivious to the alarming state of water, people around the world flush toilets and urinals with potable water and waste up-to 20% of the world’s available drinking water.
Sealed Air is committed to sustainability. It is constantly innovating business and product solutions that help its customers achieve their sustainability goals in the face of today’s biggest social and environmental challenges. One of the world’s leading QSRs having its pan India presence in its endeavor to conserve water, approached Sealed Air for the same. Water is a critical input to the agricultural systems that grow and support the food produced for its restaurants. The QSR invited the Diversey Care team to come up with a solution that can help achieve its water stewardship goals, by reducing the water consumption in public and staff amenities.
Key Challenges
The most challenging aspect was to deal with the existing practice and even mind-set of flushing after every use. On an average a urinal uses anywhere from one to three gallons (3.7 to 11.3 lt) of water for each flush. In India, water flow is generally adjusted at 2.5 lt per flush. Besides conserving water, the QSR also wanted us to address other problems of stains and odour, at a minimal cost.
The QSR outlets generally are high traffic areas, and equipped with washrooms with limited ventilation. These washrooms are most susceptible to foul odour. Even by using multiple local perfume sprays, cleaning chemicals, urinals pads, etc., the problem of order and stain remains unsolved.
To cut a long story short, the company was expected to kill four birds with one stone!
The Solution
Diversey Care came up with a highly effective and very easy to implement system, called Diversey Waterless Urinal Program.
This program is a whole new system that provides effective odour & stain control and water savings in washrooms.
The salient features of Diversey Waterless Urinal Program are:
– Capable of up to 60 % water savings
– Provides controlled and consistent fragrance release lasting up to 30 days
– Does not need external fragrance system
– Made with recyclable EVA polymer
– Very easy and simple to use
- Highly cost effective simple implementation procedure:
- Turn off water connection of all urinal stands
- Place one Taski Fresh and Clean Urinal Screen on each Urinal Stand
- Spray Good Sense Odour Eliminator Solution every two hours on the urinal bowl
- Waste collected in the urinal to be flushed out using water at the end of the day
- Urinal screen to be replaced after four weeks
The Result
It is estimated that 70 outlets of the SQSR India, (where the trials were conducted) through the “Diversey Wateless Urinal Program,” saved approximately 6,380 kiloliters, or 1,700,000 gallons, of water from going down the drain in restaurants in a 12 month period.
These 70 outlets of have an ace up their sleeves, as together they saved a whopping sum of Rs.2.8 million (approx. USD 48000), which hitherto was spent on sourcing water.
The QSR India is in the process of replicating this success in its remaining 250+ outlets.
Sealed Air not only suppling cleaning equipment and chemicals, but is helping protect consumers’ brands and the entire planet.
