Andhra to have no plastic sachets produced in the state

Strict action to be taken against producers found operating without APPCB registration

Andhra Pradesh has no non-recyclable multi-layered plastic sachets, pouches, or packaging producers, according to the state pollution control board (APPCB) in a report to the National Green Tribunal on November 2, 2022.

According to the provisions of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, it will take action against any such producer found operating without APPCB registration.

Any material used or to be used for packaging with at least one layer of plastic as the main ingredient is considered multi-layered packaging. This can be combined with one or more material layers such as paper, paperboard, polymeric materials, metal layers, and aluminium foil.

Municipalities have been directed to divert non-recyclable plastic waste to nearby cement plants. According to the submission, 19 ULBs have partnered with nearby cement plants, and 920 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic waste is used for road construction.

In addition, 41 ULBs within a 100-kilometer radius of waste-to-energy plants were instructed to send combustible dry waste to such plants.

Satish Govind filed the application on March 11, 2022, and the court order was issued in response. The management board of the Windsor Park Residents Welfare Association (WPRWA) in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, violated air quality standards by operating diesel generators.

The new equipment must comply with standards, including proper stack height, as determined by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board and the District Magistrate of Ghaziabad, according to the order.

The Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana must focus on preventing landfill fires and remediating legacy waste, according to an order issued by the NGT on November 1, 2022. Any continuing default would be held personally accountable by the Chief Secretary of Punjab.

Ludhiana has 3 million tonnes of legacy waste at the moment. The civic body must also scientifically manage current waste in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, according to the NGT.

The case was taken up in light of a media report that seven people were charred to death in a fire at a garbage dump site on Tajpur Road. Most of the deceased belonged to a ragpicker family who had lived near the landfill for the previous ten years.
