BMC scheme to keep city slums clean

In order to ensure better garbage collection services in slums, the civic standing committee has passed the resolution for a new garbage collection scheme for the city’s slums. The new scheme, Swachcha Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan, will replace the old one — Dattak Vasti Yojana — that was first initiated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in 2001.

Rahul Shewale, Chairman, Civic Standing Committee, said, “The new policy aims to bring about a large scale change in the way the city’s slums are cleaned. We have tried to come out with a policy that would result in a cleaner Mumbai in the future.” As the BMC’s garbage collection system does not extend to the slums, the civic body has appointed non-government organisations for house-to-house garbage collection, for providing dustbins to houses in slums and ensuring clean drains.
