The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has undertaken the task of cleaning the lakes in Mumbai, including Sion lake, Sheetal Talao in Kurla and Powai lake through scientific method of de-silting. Earth-moving machines and a buoyant apparatus are being used to suck out garbage from the lakes. So far 27,000 cubic metres of silt has been removed from the Sion lake and the estimates from the civic reports show there are still 50,000 cubic metres of silt lying in the lake. BMC plans to beautify the area using illumination and creating an eco-friendly park adjoining the lake.
