The Railways across India is making all out efforts to maintain its platforms, hospitals and colonies through regular cleaning and to keep it garbage free. Even smaller stations down South are outsourcing cleaning to contractors. The Tiruchirapalli Railway has recently called for labourers on contract for garbage collection from the railway colony.
The platform cleaning at Trichi has already been outsourced to a local service provider on a two-year contract. The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Sounderajan, who is responsible for the overall maintenance of the railway station and hospital, told CIJ that cleaning machines like scrubber-driers have been deployed for cleaning the platforms. “Under the contract, the service provider procures the various machines and materials required for cleaning. The overall supervision is done by our staff. The station approximately covers an area of 68,000sqm,” added Assistant Health Officer Chandrashekhar. “We do not specify the brand of the machine or materials to the service provider. Initially, we had Roots machines and the contractor is free to choose similar such machines,” he added.
