Data Centre security: Remote surveillance

Anuj Rajain, CEO, Soteria

Anuj Rajain, CEO, Soteria showcases his approach towards designing and implementing security solutions for data centres.

Overall perspective

The objective is to have economical operations with reduced carbon footprint and enhanced experience by 80% digitisation of the entire operations. Only the necessary tasks – about 20% – should be done by humans. This too is digitised with Facial Recognition based attendance, green checklist for FM activity & PPM for management of heavy asset services. The total ROI of the Human IT security solution will be seen over 36 months in which the cost of manpower will be normalised to the cost at which the security operations will be running post 90 days.

Risk Assessment

The first step of a service offering is to understand what is existing and what is additionally needed to eliminate the risks. This requires a complete understanding of the criticality of the unit and the weak points in the operations of the premises.

Soteria and Peregrine – with the joint knowledge of technology and security – study the premises to identify the weak points in the security plan, and look into various aspects of access control, fire, intrusion and loss of information and assets. The matrix is plotted to understand the details of the operations and performance needed by the system.

Monitoring System

Based on the assessment that has been carried out, the system will be recommended which will be under the following headers:

  • Access control:
  1. Employee
  2. Contracted staff
  3. Visitors
  • Fire monitoring:
  1. General area fire monitoring
  2. IT and server room fire monitoring
  • Physical parameter monitoring
  1. Temperature monitoring
  2. Humidity monitoring
  3. Air quality monitoring
  • Validation system:
  1. CCTV system
  2. AI augmented solutions for counter validation
  • Mobility solutions
  1. Physical checks
  2. Patrolling

The above systems will be strategically placed at various locations to get the details into the command & control center for ensuring that there is no gap in the system. The command & control center will be having rules and thresholds defined for the system to ensure that any exception is raised immediately for the control team to know and a response for the same can be activated. The above will be planned in conjugation with the risk assessment that will be carried out for the premises.

Alarm Handling & Response

Each system placed will be throwing an alarm that will be critical for the running of the infrastructure and the management of the same will require specialised trained resources. This will require the communication from the command center to be seamless and accurate as well as have the ground force trained to meet the requirements for closing the requirement at the site. The alarm can be of various natures, the response though needs to be in seconds, owing to the nature of the infrastructure, which is categorised as critical infrastructure.

The response teams need to be categorised: those who will be handling security, those who will be handling fire and those who will be responding to system and physical parameter-based issues. The matter needs specialised trained resources which we source from Tenon and Peregrine, with the skill set to think on their feet and ensure the problem is resolved immediately without a miss.
