GPS for garbage trucks?

The AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation) has gone hi tech with the installation of GPS (Global Positioning System) on hydraulic dumper trucks. Under the pilot project, 35 of these trucks would run along the west zone. The GPS would not only locate the vehicle but also indicate the number of trips it has conducted in a day.

These vehicles bought from JNNURM are being operated by a private contractor for door-to-door collection of trash. The AMC has also planned to tender the operation and maintenance of the vehicles to another private contractor.
