International workshop on waste to energy in India

• WTERT launches India chapter

The first-ever international workshop on Waste to Energy in India was organized by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) in association with Earth Engineering Centre, Columbia University, New York, in Mumbai. Cofounded by NEERI and EEC, the Waste to Energy and Research Technology India chapter was launched at the forum.

WTERT India will be the latest addition to the Global WTERT Council (GWC) which is already operating in the US, Canada, Greece, China, Germany, Japan, Brazil, France, the UK, Italy, and Mexico. At GWC, WTERT India will function as India’s window to the world on the entire spectrum of solid waste management issues.

The workshop debated on the existing waste management system in India and abroad in general with a focus on waste to energy opportunities in India. It was attended by 238 delegates including young researchers and scientists, service providers and entrepreneurs from USA, China, Thailand, Mauritius, Germany, Hong Kong and India.

Guest of Honour RA Rajeev while sharing the waste management practices opted by Thane Municipal corporation stressed on the urgent need to bridge the gap between existing management practices and motivated municipal corporations in India for implementation of effective Sustainable Waste Management in which Waste to Energy should be an integral part .

This event was organized under the CSIR’s mission of Wealth from Waste along with other collaborating organizations including the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoEF), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Municipal Corporations of different cities.
